Our Gospel today speaks of the order of things for the one who recognizes the value of the kingdom of heaven … of our relationship with God.
The right relationship is one where I am ready to give up all things for God. That I stop grasping things or even other people, but am ready to let go of all in order to preserve or pursue that relationship.
The value we place on things, and people, and even God is obvious in our life. As obvious as the man who sells all to purchase a pearl of great value.
Do we hold our relationship with God at that level or are there other things we place above him.
Maybe another way to ask the same question is where are we found each day? In prayer seeking God or in the market pursuing money?
What do people say when they are asked who we are? Do they say we a prayerful and devoted follower and disciple? Do they say we are a man or woman who places Jesus Christ first?
Who will they say owns our heart?
Who will our Father in heaven tell the angels we are?
Gospel
Jesus said to his disciples:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
which a person finds and hides again,
and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price,
he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,
which collects fish of every kind.
When it is full they haul it ashore
and sit down to put what is good into buckets.
What is bad they throw away.
Thus it will be at the end of the age.
The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
and throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
“Do you understand all these things?”
They answered, “Yes.”
And he replied,
“Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven
is like the head of a household
who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”
