Gospel
The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,
“Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,
but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn
as long as the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast.
No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth,
for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse.
People do not put new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined.
Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus is the continuation of the story of God’s relationship with man. He is the pinnacle and culmination of the Old Testament. But he is not confined by mosaic law.
His breaking forth in time and place as man and God, fully divine and fully human was something new. He brought the element of rebirth and communion with God, where before there was only sin and laws to follow to strive to live focused on God.
Jesus did the will of the Father for they were one with the Spirit.
He came so that we would have a path, a way to join again with the Father too. To once and for all have a way home. And Jesus paid our ticket in full.
We have only to say yes and allow our life and actions reflect the yes in our hearts. It is the easiest of things to do but few actually follow through beyond words and thoughts and professions …. and actually build a life lived for Jesus Christ.
It is an easy task yet the hardest of tasks for those who cling to this world.
Jesus makes all things new again. And he does so with our life once we decide in our heart to follow him. To say yes to his love, peace and joy. Then let go of anxiety and worry and trust he will take care of us. His peace is given and we will be new men and women living the life we were created for.
