Gospel

Mark 3:31-35

The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house.
Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him.
A crowd seated around him told him,
“Your mother and your brothers and your sisters
are outside asking for you.”
But he said to them in reply,
“Who are my mother and my brothers?”
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother.”

Some people hear this text and feel Jesus was slighting his mother. But knowing what we know about the place Mary has in salvation, her yes to the angel, her assumption into heaven, her appearances pointing to her son and impact she has had on millions and millions of people, always pointing to her Son, the immaculate one we know was highly regarded by Jesus and sits as queen of Heaven now.

So we know this was not a slight to Mary but a reflection of the love Jesus has for those who listen to him. For this who come to him and put their faith in heaven. His love is for all people. When we give ourselves, surrendering to Him, so he can help us live the life we were created for, a life of joy and peace and value and meaning, we truly are his brothers and sisters.

Today is also the day we remember St Angela who created what would become the Ursuline Order to promote religious education for girls. She knew an understanding of God was important for the family and the world.

It still is. So many people seek meaning in their life but ignore that they are spiritual creatures in a physical body. Not just physical and emotional beings. But a soul that  yearns to be near the creator.

There is no lasting meaning outside of the truth of Jesus Christ. He came for all people and all people have access to his graces and the joy and peace he offers.

Let us continue our journey by educating ourselves about Jesus like St Angela taught. Follow Christ’s teachings today. And ask our mother in heaven to pray for us to her Son.

A life as a child of God always seeking Jesus in knowledge, truth and devotion is how a brother or sister of Jesus best lives the life and blessings given.
