Jesus has cured a woman who was tormented by a demon for 18 years and couldn’t stand straight. He was, as always, focused on the person, not so much rules set in place at the time. And even within the boundaries of what could be done on the sabbath it was common that feeding and watering livestock was acceptable for they needed to eat every day and it was just part of caring for animals. And Jesus sees the contradiction and calls them out on it.

We can almost hear as this gospel closes how their reaction of indignation is setting in motion the eventual hanging of Jesus on a cross. He always chose people over constructs of man. The rules that the religious power had created had subverted the law God had given them. It no longer served as an extension of God’s word and spirit but man’s oppression on others.

Jesus shows us that we should always prioritize love of others over this world and its laws. Our love for others is second only to our love of God.

What do we put ahead of this love? Are we in a hurry all day and don’t notice or avoid those who need us? Maybe our child or a spouse. Maybe a stranger.

Our purpose in this world is not to be successful in things in this world but to be successful in things of the Spirit. To spread the good news.

Our purpose isn’t to get more things done. It is to be there for others and pay attention and listen.

Our purpose isn’t to accumulate as much wealth as possible but to see who around us needs something we can share. Our time or treasure.

In Roman Paul reminds us to focus on the things of the Spirit. Things in heaven. The stuff down here will take care of themselves if we take care of others around us and do everything for Jesus Christ.
