“For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
Jesus offers us adoption asa a member of his family. Not slaves or servants but brothers and sisters who also have a mother in Mary who looks down upon us as her own children.
How close does he hold on to us.
How much has he given for us.
How deeply is his love.
And we need this for most of us do not feel loved as much as we should. We are not as secure in our own value and worth. And the world exacerbates this tendency by recreating a false system of worth and value we can never maintain. And it fails to provide us the reassurance that we are loved.
But Jesus came to show us just that. He came to proclaim with his life that we are family and his own sisters and brothers. And our brother Jesus has come to earth and time to retrieve us and bring us home to the Father who is love.
Our brother stands before us each day and asks us to come with Him. Be with Him. To turn away from the darkness of this world and say yes again to the light and love that is Jesus Christ.
Gospel
While Jesus was speaking to the crowds,
his mother and his brothers appeared outside,
wishing to speak with him.
Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak with you.”
But he said in reply to the one who told him,
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
