She watched it all.
She who alone among those gathered in the hill was innocent.
For all present and all who live now were guilty of the torture and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It was our sins that spat upon him. That brought the lashes down on him. Ripping flesh. We placed the crown of thorns on his head.
But she was watching her baby boy cry out in pain. He wasn’t recognizable as Jesus anymore… except to a mom.
And she heard the pounding of the nails. One by one the sound of flesh and wood being broken open.
And she heard their jeers and their laughter. She heard them speak of casual things like where they would eat later. Maybe that was the worst.
Indifference.
Even some that were healed by him were there in tears. They knew what a horror was taking place. The one who heals being killed for healing.
All she saw was her baby boy and Lord of love being punished for loving.
And she sees the sins of ours that killed him and she chooses to be our mother anyway. To show us the way to him and his cross. To show us our cross and what is required of us.
Just do what Jesus did. Love God and love others.
And she watches the world now and comes to tell us often to turn back from our sin. She remembers even at his first miracle she told us.. do what he says. She is a mom and plain spoken. She doesn’t speak in parables but words you hear in a kitchen. Do what he says.
And she still sees that day when he died. It is like yesterday and tomorrow. The day everyone abandoned him. Like many do today.
And we are here in this world of ours with all the noise and activities and things to worry about. What are we focuses on this Palm Sunday? Are we present while we hear his passion?
And she says to us do what he tells you.
