Saint Francis de Sales took seriously the words of Christ, “Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart.”

He was known as the Gentleman Saint even though he once said it took him 20 years to control his quick temper. He was also known for his writings and work defending the faith after the reformation.  And he did all with gentle charity.

He was said to have preached short but spellbinding sermons.

And all done with love.

His motto was, “He who preaches with love, preaches effectively.” His goodness, patience and mildness became proverbial.

St Francis de Sales also was known for  keeping his preaching on point. Emphasizing a single aspect or grace in his preaching.

Perhaps in our own evangelizing whether in the pulpit or the market or even with friends we should take his way of speaking about finite and specific topics of faith with love. Bite size pieces.

Let us remember to always approach everyone, especially those who do not believe or struggle with their faith as St Francis de Sales did. With love and charity.

St Francis said and believed, “a spoonful of honey attracts more flies than a barrelful of vinegar.”

As faithful followers we can be brimming over with the love of Jesus Christ in our hearts and it can become so great we cannot help but share that faith with others.

St Francis coaches us today to remember to be brief and share out of that love and charity for others.
